Preparing properly before you leave will save you money, luggage space, and stress after arrival.

Before you even step on the plane, the decisions you make in Bangladesh will determine how comfortable and cost-efficient your first few months in the United States will be.

One of the biggest mistakes students make is underestimating the weather. While Texas is not known for extreme winters, the wind can make temperatures feel significantly lower than expected. On some days, it can feel like you are dealing with near-freezing conditions, especially early in the morning. More importantly, if you ever travel outside Texas, you will likely face true winter conditions, including negative temperatures.

Because of this, it is strongly advised to bring a solid collection of winter clothing—jackets, hoodies, and warm innerwear. Clothing in the United States is noticeably more expensive, and since garments are manufactured in Bangladesh, you have a clear advantage by purchasing them locally. Places like Bongo Bazar and ESCO Tower offer affordable and decent-quality options, making them ideal for pre-departure shopping.

Another critical factor is luggage management. Most airlines allow 23 kilograms per bag, but many students run into volume problems before reaching the weight limit. Bulky items like jackets and blankets take up space quickly. A highly effective solution is to use vacuum bags. These allow you to compress items such as puffer jackets, blankets, and even body pillows (kol balish), helping you maximize your luggage capacity.

You should also think about your electronics setup. Since U.S. outlets differ from those in Bangladesh, bring at least one plug converter along with a Bangladeshi multi-plug. This combination allows you to power multiple devices without needing several converters. Additionally, small items like charging cables, power banks, and sunglasses may seem minor, but they become extremely useful in day-to-day life.

If you have extra space, bringing basic bedding like bedsheets and pillow covers can also save you money and effort during your first few days.
